Smith fundraiser

Sloppy Joes and cheesy potatoes will be the centerpiece of a meal being sold at Messiah Lutheran Church to raise funds for Jacob Smith, a 13-year-old Yates Center boy who is being treated for neuroblastoma. He is the younger brother of Ashley Smith of Emporia.

Serving will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Monday in the church’s fellowship hall, 1101 Neosho St.

Other foods included in the meal are Jell-O salads, homemade pies, celery and carrot sticks and a beverage.

The cost is $4 per person.

Taco dinner

The sixth annual Taco Dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at the Didde Catholic Campus Center. The menu includes homemade pan-fried tacos, chips, Mexican rice, frijoles charros, dessert and beverage. The cost is $6 for adults; and $4 for children 11 and younger. Tacos also may be purchased: One taco, $1.75; six, $9; or 12, $18.

Penny supper

The Hartford United Methodist Women will serve the Penny Supper, beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday at the church. Some of the foods served include ham loaf, chicken pie, liver and onions, a variety of vegetables and salads, pie and ice cream.

Bowling tournament

The 55th annual Kansas American Legion Auxiliary Bowling Association (K.A.L.A.B.A.) tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Flint Hills Lanes, sponsored by American Legion Ball-McColm Post 5. It is planned to have a door prize for each woman bowler. Chances will be sold to win an afghan, which is burgundy with a pink ribbon for breast cancer awareness month. Tickets, six for $5 or one for $1, will be sold until noon Sunday. All proceeds will be used for a youth project. For more information, or to be a bowler in the tournament, to become a member of the Auxiliary or to donate prizes, call Marcella McGuire at 342-1906.

Quilt show and home tour

The second annual Quilt Show and Historic Home Tour will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at 141 W. Fremont Ave., in Burlingame. Antique and contemporary quilts and handcrafted porcelain dolls will be displayed throughout the historic showplace. At 2 p.m., there will be a lecture, “Signature Quilts.” Vendors will be in the courtyard and lunch sold from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Hosts are Kathy Smith of the Great Plains Quilt Company and home owner Jim Nelson. Tickets are $5 in advance and $6 at the door. Proceeds will benefit the Burlingame Historical Preservation Society and Friends of Bethany Place. The home is not handicapped accessible.

Fall festival

The annual Fall Festival in Olpe will be held Sunday at St. Joseph Catholic School. The dinner and games begin at 3 p.m. and end at 6:30 p.m. Bingo begins at 6:45 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall. There also will be a raffle with the grand prize of a handmade quilt. Tickets for the ham and roast beef dinner are $8 for adults; $3 for youth 6-10 years; and $1 for children younger than six years.

McTeacher’s night

McDonalds will host McTeacher’s Night from 4 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 7 at 18th and Industrial and 1202 W. Sixth Ave. Students, parents, teachers and principals and school supporters and hungry customers are invited. According to a news release, “McTeacher’s Nights give communities a chance to support area schools through a different dining experience beyond their normal dinner plans.” Proceeds from the McTeacher’s Night will be donated to local education partners. All levels from grade, middle and high school, and public and private schools will be represented.
