Emporia High’s boys soccer team improved to 7-2 on Tuesday night, defeating Topeka West 3-0.
Alex Guevara got the Spartans on the board early, heading in a cross from Jose Rios for his 13th goal of the year. The Spartans held their 1-0 lead until they added to it with 15 minutes remained in the game, when Adam Sanchez scored off a pass from Freddy Sanchez. Six minutes after that, Rios dribbled his way past two defenders on the left side and scored.
Meanwhile, the EHS defense clamped down for yet another shutout, Emporia’s fifth of the season.
“We were lucky to be ahead by one goal during halftime because West was attacking more than us,” Emporia coach Angel Cornejo said, “but thanks to (goalkeeper) Cory Obermeyer and our defense, they did not score. ...
“In the second half, we were more aggressive and our defense stepped up to help Cory keep a clean sheet for the game. Sophomore Blaze Witten had a tremendous second half, stopping West’s leading scorer and best player, Sergio Lira.”
The Spartans host Manhattan at TRYSA on Thursday beginning at about 6:15 p.m.
