Emporia High’s volleyball team won two matches going away over Highland Park and Topeka West before dropping a closely contested match to Shawnee Heights on Tuesday at Heights.
The Spartans defeated Highland Park 25-16, 25-14 and Topeka West 25-16, 25-13 before losing to Heights 22-25 and 23-25. Emporia coach Betsy Martling said the Spartans played good volleyball against Heights, but “they’re just a good team.”
“The girls are really coming around, and I’m hoping that we’re going to be able to peak at the right time this year,” Martling said. “They still have a lot of growing to do, but I think we still have a lot of potential we haven’t tapped yet.”
The Spartans play on Thursday night at Olathe Northwest in a quad that also features Olathe North and Shawnee Mission Northwest. They then travel to the Ottawa Tournament on Saturday morning.
