Conflict

Wednesday, October 1, 2008

IT IS ON record that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and husband spent between $50,000 to $100,000 for stock in Clean Energy Fuels Corporation (CLNE: NASDAQ).

She is on record as favoring the Clean Energy Fuels bill.

Is this not a conflict of interest?

P.S. I was a Gazette paper boy in Burlington in 1941-1942. William Allen White personally signed Christmas cards I gave my subscribers.

P.P.S. I was born in Newman Memorial Hospital when folks lived in Americus.

Well George, let's see. Might you own some oil or gas rights? Just asking.

Chris Walker, you need to start signing some Christmas cards. I think it would be a nice touch, kinda like a tribute to your past.

Observation, have a heart. :)

Thanks for the letter, George, and the history associated with it. My parents got some of those Christmas Cards signed by Mr. White. I had forgotten about them. Unfortunately, I don't have any of them. It would be nice today.

create, I think that George's point is that Mrs. Pelosi enjoys a special status, and with that, certain responsibilities to avoid conflicts of interest, or even the appearance of such. Consequently, I agree with his implicit point that it is improper for Mrs. Pelosi to hold those stocks and vote in favor of legislation that would help the issuing company because, by doing so, she personally benefits. Can you imagine what an explosion would occur if Mrs. Pelosi was a Republican instead of a Democrat? MSNBC would melt down and Pat Kelley would be writing editorials about it until after Christmas.

I'm thinking that a company named Clean Energy Fuels Corporation isn't the same thing as a clean energy fuels bill.

I haven't seen the bill, but I seriously doubt it refers to any specific company.

Well, let's see how many earmarks get attached to this bailout bill..... I've already heard some pretty far-out ones...

According to the news this morning, there are indeed some clean/renewable energy earmarks on the current bailout bill. Here's an article that mentions them.

Jayhawk, I will accept your input with regard to Pelosi's conflict of interest. I knew exactly what George was getting at, but still, I was wrong to accuse him. I was thinking of an in-law of mine in Texas who inherited oil rights and constantly gloats over the checks he gets saying he hopes the "shortages" continue and I got irritated. Yeah, I know, at all Texans. Makes no sense. I'm sorry, George.

You are a nice person, create. I had faith that you would apologize. Thanks.

I would recommend avoiding MSNBC. Those folks will corrupt you.
