Teacher is a Master
Former Emporian Chuck Law is Lawrence’s Master Teacher for the 2008-09 school year.
Law graduated from Emporia High School in 1986 and taught at EHS for four years before moving to Lawrence. He is now the head basketball coach at Free State High School, where he teaches social studies. He has also served as department chairman at the school.
Law will be the Lawrence school district’s nominee for the Kansas Master Teacher program, sponsored by the Teachers College at Emporia State University. The university will announce seven statewide winners in the spring.
A 1990 graduate of the University of Kansas, Law is the son of Mary Ann Law and the late Don Law.
Bankers learn about
lending
Joe Jones and Mike Tovar, both assistant vice presidents at Lyon County State Bank, recently completed the 2008 Principles of Commercial Lending School.
The event, held in Topeka, is sponsored by the Kansas and Nebraska Bankers Associations in partnership with bankers associations in Colorado, Iowa, Louisiana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.
The school provides introductory instruction in the entire lending process and assists participants in developing skills that allow them to better serve customers’ multiple financial needs.

Change a name;
cut a ribbon
To mark a new name for an Emporia business, the Emporia Are Chamber and Visitors Bureau has planned a ribbon cutting at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Cassell Insurance, 527 Commercial St., Suite 304.

Six attend lawn-care meeting
Mike Scheller, Larry Drum, Jeff Booth, John Wiemers, Luann Davies and Kyle Peres of Scheller’s Lawn and Landscape recently attended the 55th annual Kansas Turfgrass Conference. The two-day event, held in Topeka, included seminars and workshops on advanced turf management, turf and ornamental pest management, landscape and irrigation management and the latest Kansas State University research for the lawn-care industry.
Old Glory linked
with parade
The Emporia Christmas Parade marks a special event for Old Glory. The shop at 1107-A Commercial St., opened on the night of the 2003 parade.
Owner Becky Setterstrom said in a news release that Old Glory sells antiques, original paintings and collectibles — everything from birdhouses to chalkware reproductions she makes — “to handmade rugs made by your Grammy.”
The store is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays, her days off from Setterstrom Chiropractic, “unless there’s a great auction or a sick grandchild.”
