Stutler Technologies plays role in recovery

Saturday, November 29, 2008

As Greensburg recovers from a devastating 2007 tornado, Stutler Technologies of Emporia is working to provide the foundation for its wireless networks.

Stutler Technologies has received the contract with Haviland Telephone Co., which will use WiMAX-based broadband wireless systems to deploy, operate and manage the countywide WiMAX system. Airspan Networks of Boca Raton, Fla., developed the network, which will consist of base stations placed in the county’s highest points to communicate with Airspan subscriber units in businesses and homes.

After the tornado, a team from Kansas State University noted the absence of an effective means of communications within the county and community. Team members worked with the county to create a 21st-century model for rural community communication. The model includes the distribution of WiMAX-enabled laptops and desktop computers to homes, businesses and government entities and the development of a community media center to ensure member participation and serve as aportal for community news and information.

Gene West, chairman of the Kiowa County Commission, said in a news release that Stutler Technologies “has provided invaluable technical support” in the design of the system.

J.J. Stutler is president of Stutler Technologies, one of the nation’s largest system integrators for large wireless-equipment manufacturers.

We could really use this kind of innovation and leadership in rural Virginia as well. We have fiber in more populated areas, and have recruited a number of companies based on that, but the average home only has dial-up in the more rural areas.

Green County North Carolina observed business growth, a higher percentage of H.S. grads going to college, and even lower teen pregnancy rates after deploying broadband. I wonder what your community's experience will be.
