Burlington
The Coffey County Republican reported that the Coffey County engineer expressed concerns over limited salt supply. During the winter of 2007-2008, the county used twice as much salt than it normally uses. Coffey County began re-stocking salt in June. The county paid $36 a ton for salt in June. Two weeks ago, the price jumped to $43 per ton. The county’s salt storage is full with about 535 tons of salt. Normally, this would be enough for the county, but it’s only half of what the county used last year, which will put the county at a shortage.
Council Grove
The Council Grove Republican reported that the City Council discussed heavy snow removal. Danny Matthews, city administrator, asked if the city should raise the side street policy to five inches to help cut budget costs. He cited costs from four years ago, which were $12,000 for snow removal in three-inch snow. This figure includes labor, equipment and materials. The discussion was tabled to allow public awareness of the issue.
