Texas A&M International came out in a half-court trap on Friday night that caught Emporia State by surprise.
The way the Lady Hornets adjusted had to surprise the Dustdevils. Emporia State ended the first half on 28-0 run and cruised to an easy 115-63 victory in the opening game of the the Texas A&M-Kingsville tournament.
“I think after we kind of figured out what it was we were playing against, the girls did a really nice job of adjusting on the fly,” coach Brandon Schneider said.
Sophia Lenard sparked the Lady Hornets early, burying four threes in the first half when she scored all 16 of her points.
Lenard came into the game 0-for-1 on the season shooting threes, but her coaches have been encouraging her to shoot from long distance. Lenard scored Emporia State’s first six points and then scored 10 during the 28-0 run.
Alli Volkens benefited from the attention her 3-point shooting teammates garnered, and finished with a season-high 18 points to lead five Lady Hornets in double figures.
Jamie Augustyn scored 16 points and Lacy Corker added 13. Schneider said his centers had their best games of the season with senior center Allie Renberg coming off the bench to score 13 points and grab 10 rebounds.
Ida Edwards had a game-high 19 rebounds. Edwards came into the game as the Lady Hornets second-leading scorer, but she let her teammates take care of the scoring against Texas A&M International.
“She was really active,” Schneider said. “Because of the half court trap, she wasn’t able to get involved as much offensively. ... We really had a nice team effort out of everyone.”
Edwards’ 19 rebounds were the most by a Lady Hornet since Michelle Stueve had 21 against Shaw on Nov. 29, 2005 and the most by a Lady Hornet other than Stueve since Myshka Wlikerson grabbed 19 against Saint Mary (Kan.) College on Nov. 18, 2000.
The Dustdevils came into the game forcing 36 turnovers, and the Lady Hornets struggled early to deal with their full-court press and half-court trap. They finished with 27 turnovers, but thanks to a great shooting night, they scored 115 points, the most they’ve scored away from White Auditorium since a 124-44 win over McPherson College in the Lady Buff Classic on Nov. 20, 1999.
Emporia State plays again today at 4 p.m. against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Kingsville won on Friday night against Central Missouri, 80-74, and is 1-3 this season. Texas A&M International fell to 3-2.
