Sherry Nelson and Randy Wells, physical education teachers at Emporia High School, have received their National Board Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
They are among only six teachers in the Emporia Public Schools and 70,000 teachers nationwide to achieve national certification.
National Board Certification is a voluntary assessment program to recognize and reward accomplished teachers, according to a news release from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. While state licensing systems set basic requirements to teach in each state, NBCTs have demonstrated advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices. Certification typically takes one to three years of a rigorous performance-based assessment.
Teachers build a portfolio that includes student work samples, assignments, video recordings and a thorough analysis of their classroom teaching. Teachers also are assessed on their knowledge of the subjects they teach.
The National Research Council of the National Academies released a report that students taught by National Board Certified Teachers make higher gains on achievement tests than those taught by teachers who have not applied or did not achieve certification.
The report also found that certification positively impacts teacher retention and professional development.
Research consistently shows that NBC Teachers provide their students with quality learning. National Board Certification is teaching’s highest professional credential.
