County’s sales tax numbers are down

Thursday, November 27, 2008

Lyon County sales tax numbers are under last year’s amount by $28,000, Lyon County commissioners were told at Wednesday’s action session.

Lyon County Controller Dan Slater said while the county is officially behind 2007’s totals, it’s only by a small amount and it is still significantly higher than in 2005 and 2006. The county’s sales tax collections are up by $85,000 from 2006’s figures and $120,000 above 2005’s figures.

Slater said he’s more concerned about interest rates having an effect on the county rather than sales tax revenue.

“Our local economy really is much, much better than the national economy,” Slater said. “We are very late going into this recession and maybe we can be very early coming out of it.”

In other business:

• Commissioners reviewed bids for a 2009 Chevrolet Impala for the Community Corrections department. Robert Sullivan of Community Corrections said the low bid came from the state contract at $16,439 with a 60,000-mile warranty. The local bids included the price, which includes a 100,000-mile power train warranty. Commissioners instructed Sullivan to check with local bidders to see how much the price would be with a 60,000-mile warranty. If the price difference hits the 5 percent threshold, the bid can be awarded locally. If it doesn’t, the bid has to be awarded to the state contract.

• Commissioners approved a software upgrade for a building automation system.

• Commissioners awarded the ADA remodel project of rest rooms at the Flint Hills Community Health Center/Lyon County Health Department and the Lyon County Highway Department to Markowitz Builders. Markowitz bid $52,000 for the project.

• Commissioners discussed the Lyon County Courthouse’s roof, which has been leaking. A scan was performed on the roof and indicated that there are several areas that are damp. No definitive cause of the leaks have been determined.
