Zoo lighting

The David Traylor Emporia Zoo will begin its holiday season this evening with a lighting ceremony called “Happy Holidaze.” The ceremony will begin at 5:45 p.m. in the zoo at Soden’s Grove at the south end of Commercial Street.

People attending the ceremony are asked to park by the ball field in Soden’s Grove or at the All Veterans Memorial across Commercial Street from the park. Transportation over to the zoo will be available for those who need it.

The lighting of the zoo has long been one of the most popular events of the Christmas season in Emporia.

New general manager

Emporia’s Radio Stations announced Monday evening that long-time employee Ron Thomas will become the stations’ new general manager on Jan. 1. Thomas will continue to work on-air in the mornings.

Thomas, who said he looked forward to the challenge of his additional job, has been operations manager of Emporia’s Radio Stations for many years. He started at KVOE/KFFX as afternoon news anchor in 1986. He left Emporia briefly in 1990, but returned in 1991.

Woman scammed

SALINA — An Internet scam has cost a 65-year-old Salina woman $170,000, an amount that police say may be the largest reported to be lost locally to scammers.

Police said Monday that a person the woman met on the Internet in September sent her what appeared to be a U.S. treasury check for $456,000. She was asked to deposit the check in her bank and wire a portion of the money back to her new friend.

Deputy Police Chief Carson Mansfield said that she deposited the check at Bank of America in Salina on Oct. 4 and before it cleared, withdrew $170,000 to wire to England. About a month later, the $456,000 check came back as counterfeit.
