COUNCIL GROVE

Just west of Council Grove on Highway 56 is a peaceful place for guests to relax and experience life on a working ranch.

Charles and Cheryl Downes of Council Grove opened up The Heritage House at Canning Creek Ranch, 1532 S. 1400 Road in September. The home is owned by Chuck Downes with Charles and Cheryl Downes as the proprietors. The bed and breakfast is five miles west of Council Grove and 3/4 mile north off of Highway 56. The house was built in 1903 and renovated in 2007.

The remodel retained the home’s Victorian style with modern comforts for guests. The home is surrounded by 560 acres of land. All but 150 acres is being restored back to native grassland to support wildlife, Charles Downes said. The ranch also runs a cow/calf operation, goats, a pony and an ostrich.

The home has four guest rooms. The Vintage Rose room has a king size four post bed and a sitting area looks to the north. The Prairie Sage has a queen size bed and a private bath with a glass block wall and a claw foot tub.

Grandma’s Parlor is the largest of the four rooms and has a king size bed, private bath and windows that faces the west and the south. Annie’s Attic is a small cozy room with an alcove sitting area, a queen-sized sleigh bed and a private bath across the hall.

Rooms can be rented individually or the entire home can be rented, Charles Downes said. The home also includes a fully remodeled kitchen with granite countertops, modern appliances and plenty of space for cooking and mingling.

The home has been in the Downes family since 1951 when John and Connie Downes purchased it. It was remodeled in 1949 and had three rooms removed from it.

The home was passed down to other members of the family in 2007, when the current remodel started taking place. The remodel took 17 months and in September was ready for guests.

The garage is being renovated now. When finished, the garage can be used as a meeting room or reception room. The home’s parlor and dining room can be used as a meeting place until the outside one is completed.

“It’s been a long project and it’s still ongoing,” Downes said.

Downes said the home can be used for just about anything including, special events, honeymoons, small weddings, business meetings, scrapbooking retreats, quilter retreats, family reunions, fisherman, hunters, Red Hat events, couples getaway, bridal showers, afternoon tea, engagement site or baby showers.
