Representatives of Eagles Aerie No. 2587 will be at Walmart Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to receive merchandise and monetary donations for a project to send care packages to Emporia-area and Kansas service men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Snacks, candies, canned meats, boxed foods, portable electronic games, double- and AAA batteries, paperback books, and toys such as Frisbees and yo-yos are preferred over basic necessities, like soap and deodorant, that can be obtained easily at a PX, according to Ralph Tebbetts, an organizer for the project.
Donations may be made at Walmart, or taken to the following businesses that have volunteered to be drop points for the project: D & T Auto Sales, 1806 W. Sixth Ave.; Midas Touch Golden Tans, 2918 W. Highway 50; Monarch Tattoos, 20 1/2 E. Seventh Ave.; the American Legion, 2921 W. 12th Ave.; Dave’s Place, Strong City; the Town Royal, 405 Commercial St.; the Eagles Aerie, 1130 E. Ninth Ave.; and the U.S. Army Recruiters office.
The deadline for donating is Nov. 28, to allow volunteers time to pack the boxes and get them mailed overseas in time for Christmas distribution. Contributions also will be accepted to help defray mailing costs.
More information may be had by calling the Eagles, 342-1553, or Tebbetts, 757-5633.

I'd like to extend a BIG! Thanks to Sauder Custom Fabrication Inc. for their very generious donation of 2 Gross of AA & AAA batteries. My guess is that along with the Gummi Bears & Beef Jerky, the batteries will be amoung the first things to be grabbed up by the troops.
