The H. Dale Buck Animal Welfare Fund received a boost in supplies this week thanks to the hard work of pre-schoolers and kindergartners at Sacred Heart School.
Sue Ella Touslee, kindergarten teacher at Sacred Heart School, said each class at the school did a service project. The pre-schoolers and kindergartners chose the Buck Fund.
“They, of course, are interested in animals,” Touslee said.
The groups started the food and supply drive for the Buck Fund on the Feast of St. Francis.
“He’s the patron saint of animals,” Touslee said. “The (students) have been pretty excited about bringing it in.”
The supplies donated to the Buck Fund by the students included food, treats, cat litter and dog and cat toys. Rebecca Hamman-Hernandez, executive director of the Buck Fund, picked up the supplies. She explained to the children where the donations would be going and why. The Buck Fund operates the Buck Fund Dog Park near Wal-Mart and the Catty Shack downtown. It has 23 cats and kittens at the Catty Shack and 16 cats in foster homes. Donations are used to support the numerous animals the Buck Fund cares and finds homes for.
The children had lots of questions for Hamman-Hernandez. One child asked if the Buck Fund takes care of horses.
“Well, horses are a little bit big for us,” Hamman-Hernandez said. “But some dogs are almost as big as horses.”
