A strong finish to junior Jenna Stanbrough’s season highlighted Emporia High’s day at the Class 5A state cross country meet on Saturday at Rim Rock Farm north of Lawrence.
Stanbrough, who battled anemia toward the end of the season, ran in 11th place in the 5A girls race, earning a spot on the All-State team to lead the EHS girls to a seventh-place finish. Stanbrough’s time of 16 minutes, 26.46 seconds was about four seconds behind 10th-place finisher Lauren Jaqua of Lansing. The top 20 runners make All-State.
“Jenna has had outstanding races the last two weeks,” EHS coach Mark Stanbrough said. “Her work in the summer, averaging 50 miles a week, paid off as she improved from her 56th-place finish a year ago to earn all-state honors.”
The EHS girls finished with 104 points. Abigail Chiroy posted the Spartans’ second-best time, running the course in 17:21.60, and fellow freshman Abbey Davies finished 50th. Whitney Bauck finished 53rd, Joslyn Barton 62nd and Mysha Mason 76th. Katie Weaver, the Spartan girls’ only senior, came in 79th.
The Spartan boys, who won the Class 5A state title last year and had finished in the top two at state for five years in a row, also finished seventh. Senior Octavio Dikin came close to all-state honors, finishing 23rd with a time of 17:20.21. Tyler Tilton finished 29th at 17:30.34, and Jack Heim ran in 31st. Matt Wayman clocked a 34th-place finish, Cody Black finished 71st, Matt Fry 73rd and Drew Detwiler 78th. The Spartan boys finished with 150 points.
St. Thomas Aquinas won the team title on both the boys and girls sides. The Aquinas girls finished with 74 points, 10 ahead of Kapaun, which was led by individual state champion MacKenzie Maki. Maki’s time was 15:12.10. PJ Greer won the individual boys title for Aquinas, running in 16:03.57.
Mark Stanbrough thought Emporia competed well, with the girls finishing just five points out of fifth and the boys sixth place out of fifth.
“I’m proud of both teams for the nice progress we made throughout the season,” Stanbrough said. “We had to fight through several injuries, but the team worked hard and stayed positive to run our best races at the end of the season when it counted most.”

"All State"?
I'm kind of a newbie, but I've never heard of All State in XC. You run at the state meet, and if you win you are the state champion and if you finish in the top 20 you get a medal. I've never heard it referred to as "All State". I can't see it referred to in that manner anywhere else, such as on the state meet host site or the cross country / track & field coaches web site, so I'm just curious.
I'm not saying Coach Stanbrough made it up, so it would sound better --- "All State" vs. "finished 11th" --- but .... well, you know, I am kind of thinking that's what it looks like.
Anybody out there know about this?
PS- Great race by Jenna, whether it's "All State" or not. 16:26 on that Rim Rock course is pretty salty.

Um, Ralph, the term "All State" is appropriate here. As it goes in Kansas cross country, if you medal at the state meet, you are then considered an "All State runner". The top 20 runners make up the All State runners. So Coach Stanbrough wasn't just blowing smoke like you insinuated.

Considered "All State" by whom?
I just couldn't find anything that referenced any "All State" for XC.
Is it a KSHSAA thing? KCCTFCA? A newspaper?
Or just dads who coach?

Really? You're really that concerned about this? As far as I know, it is a KSHSAA thing.

Concerned? Not really.
Curious? Yeah, sort of.
Anybody else out there? Is there an "All State" in XC?

Take it from a former "All-State" cross country runner (myself), it's legit. I don't know what else to tell you. Stanbrough isn't blowing smoke just because Jenna's his daughter. He had a squad of All-Staters on the boys side last year. Michaela Reynolds was an All-Stater as a junior even though she didn't win the title that year. Sheesh, it's not like he crowned her state champion or anything.

Okay, then.
Thanks for clearing that up.
You're "All State" in my book, batbatly!
