Burlington

The Coffey County Republican reported that a decision made by the Burlington City Council to immediately implement a water rate increase was met with protests from wholesale customers who did not have time to pass the increase on to customers.

The decision ultimately was to postpone the rate increase for all customers for one month. The increase was 40 percent, which takes the rates from $3.20 to $4.50 for every 1,000 gallons of water.

Hartford

The Coffey County Republican reported that the Southern Lyon County USD 252 School Board will raise breakfast and lunch prices for the first time in two years. The new prices proposed for the first semester are K-6 breakfast, $1.40; K-6 lunch, $2.50; 7-12 breakfast, $1.40; 7-12 lunch $2.50. Extra milk will be $.40. The meals prices are $25 more than the 2007-08 prices. The board approved the fees for the first semester and voted to revisit fees in December due to rising costs.

Madison

The Madison News reported that the Madison City Pool opened on May 26 and will be open Monday through Saturday from 12 to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 to 6 p.m. Pool prices are $2 for children ages 6-11 and senior citizens over 60; and $2.50 for adults. Anyone under the age of 5 swims free as long as they are with an adult. Monthly passes are $25 per individual or $60 per family.
