Brown Bags
The Emporia Public Library has announced the schedule for the annual Brown Bag concerts which are held at noon Wednesdays in the library courtyard (inside in case of rain). Pizza and beverages will be sold by Wheat State Pizza. Seating is limiting; bring lawn chairs. New this year, at 11 a.m., will be “create an art project with the Emporia Arts Council.”
The first concert on Wednesday will be by The Bubbleman — Ron Tibbetts — “back by popular demand.” The remaining concerts are:
F June 11: The Usual Suspects, a local band playing music of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s;
F June 18: Sweetwater, a Christian pop band;
F June 25: Brian Wendling — juggling and humor;
F July 2: Patriotic Pride — Shows on the Go, trio, Cynthia Ziesman;
F July 9: Sock Hop Smiles with Dennis Porter and Happy Faces Entertainment;
F July 16: Musical Showcase featuring students of Jane McCoy;
F July 23: Dan Dan the Magic Man (Dan Heath);
F July 30: Emporia’s Got Talent — 12 local people will compete for prizes.
Sponsors are the Emporia Public Library, Friends of the Library, Emporia Arts Council, Emporia Main Street, Lyon County Historical Society.
Art in the Garden
This event will be held 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 7 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 8 at the Toad Hollow Iris and Daylily Farm, 1534 Road 170. The farm is four miles east of Emporia on Interstate Highway 35 to Exit 135 and following the signs.
Admission is free. Food and refreshments will be sold, with proceeds used to benefit programs at Camp Wood. Donations also will be accepted for the camp.
A silent auction is planned to benefit the ESU Art Department.
Art classes
Summer classes have begun at the Emporia Arts Council, 618 Mechanic St., with classes for children from ages 2 to 5, 6 to 11, 12 to 16 and 17 to adult. For a complete list of classes, times and dates, see The Gazette “Discover” May 23 section or stop by the Arts Center for a brochure.
Classes for ages 2-5 in June are Fun with Food, Experimenting with Paint, Oodles of Noodles and More; for ages 6-11 in June are Beginners Wheel Throwing, Shrink Plastic Magic, Hip Chicks. Ceramics Handbuilding Level 1, Jazz Dance, Create a SuperHero, Food and Flowers, It’s a String Thing, For the Birds and Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Decoupage Cigar Boxes;
Ages 12-16 in June are Wheel-Throwing Techniques, Ceramics Handbuilding Level 2, Beginners Wheel-Throwing, Shrink Plastic Magic, Cartooning, Knotted Bead Necklaces, What’s So Funny;
Ages 17-adult in June are Basic Book Making, Illustrating, Wheel Throwing Techniques, Cartooning, Muraling, What’s So Funny?
The Summer Theatre Camp (ages 8-12) in conjunction with the Emporia Recreation Center, will be held from July 21 through July 25, with the registration deadline of June 11. Fees must be prepaid to hold a space in the classes. There is limited enrollment. To register, call 343-6473.
Music at library
“Metamorphosis of Music” will be presented at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Gridley Branch of Coffey County Library. Lunch will be served after the program. Musician Randy Bevard of Iola, who has taught guitar for eight years, will talk about how popular music has changed over the last 50 years. He also will perform songs, give guitar tips and answer questions. The program and lunch are free of charge. For more information, call (620) 836-3905.
Quilt show
The Sunflower Piecemakers Quilt Guild of Ottawa will present their 24th annual Quilt Show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 7 and 8 at the Ottawa Middle School. There is a $3 admission fee; children under 12 accompanied by an adult, no charge. There will be a special display of the Spring 2007 Hoffman Challenge Quilt winners and winners from the MoKan Longarm Machine Quilters Challenge of 2008, along with quilts made by members of the Ottawa guild. Members will be working on projects and will share tips and techniques. Vendors will sell a variety of items. The annual miniature quilt auction will begin at 3 p.m. June 8 with about 45 small quilts and wall hangings donated by members. Proceeds will go to the Franklin County Historical Society. Hunt debut
Musician and songwriter Kelley Hunt, formerly of Emporia, will perform at 7 p.m. June 14 at Crossroads KC to celebrate the release of her fourth album, “Mercy,” which was released May 15. Her music also will be featured in the upcoming movie, “Bunker Hill,” directed by Kevin Willmott. Hunt, the daughter of Milie and Mary Sue Wade of Emporia, has performed all over the world. Tickets are $16.50 (general admission), $27 (reserved) and $76.50 VIP seating, meet and greet and copy of “Mercy.”
