Emporian Nishat Yasmin had said that her success at the Scripps National Spelling Bee likely rested on luck in the drawing of words for contestants. On Friday afternoon, Nishat was asked to spell "piquancy" in the second round of the bee, and found the word not to her taste. The first round was a test round.
Her incorrect spelling — "piccancy" — ended the competition for her.
Nishat was one of three spellers representing Kansas in the national competition, which is underway now in Washington, D.C.
