County attorney files

Marc Goodman has paid a filing fee and officially become a candidate for re-election to a third term as Lyon County Attorney.

Goodman had announced his intention on March 28, when he filed paperwork with Lyon County Clerk Karen Hartenbower to identify his campaign treasurer, Charisse Symmonds, and campaign chairman, Steve Haught.

An interview with Goodman about his prosecution record and other accomplishments during his terms in office, appeared in the March 29 issues of The Gazette.

Interim dean named

Kenneth Weaver will take the reins as dean of Emporia State University’s Teachers College while a search commences to replace Tes Mehring, who was named provost and academic vice-president earlier this month. She takes over her new duties in mid-June.

Weaver is a Roe R. Cross Distinguished Professor and current chair of ESU’s department of psychology and special education. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of South Carolina and a doctorate from Columbia University. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines, where he worked in rural public health education. He came to ESU in 1986 and has chaired the psychology department since 1995.

After a national search, the university hopes to name a dean by July 2009.

Pyramid Pizza closes

Pyramid Pizza will be closed for the summer for maintenance and for owner Eric Harpel to search for a new owner, Harpel said Wednesday. He said he would try to find a new owner in time for the restaurant at 11 E. Sixth Ave. to be open again around Labor Day.

“I’ve moved to Wisconsin, and without me here, it’s not the same,” said Harpel, who moved a little more than a year ago. “And I don’t feel we were putting out good enough service and product without me here.”

Harpel was originally a part-owner of Pyramid in 1993, sold it in 2000, then bought it back with his wife, Kelly, in 2004.
