Hernandez tabbed player of the year by baseball writers

Emporia State’s Keith Hernandez earned his second national player of the year award on Wednesday, as he was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association Player of the Year.
Hernandez was one of four Hornets that earned distinction from the NCBWA.
Outfielder Eric Shortell was named second-team All-America, outfielder Brian Majors was third-team All-America and pitcher Tyler Applehans was an honorable mention All-America selection.
Hernandez hit .462 with 18 home runs and 80 RBI. He also was named the ABCA/Rawlings Position and Overall Player of the Year on Tuesday.
Shortell contributed an MIAA-record 23 home runs to go with 33 stolen bases, while Majors batted .423 and set a new conference record with 107 hits.
Applehans was named first-team All-MIAA and first-team All-Region after finishing 10-1 with a 3.29 earned-run average.
