Emporia State catcher Keith Hernandez took his biggest honor on Tuesday, as he received the ABCA/Rawlings National Overall Player of the Year award.
The senior also was named the National Position Player of the Year.
Hernandez is the first Hornet to take Overall Player of the Year since the Hornets joined the NCAA. He batted .462 with 18 home runs and 80 RBI and led the MIAA in six offensive categories this season.
The right-handed hitter had already taken MIAA Player of the Year and first-team All-Region honors.
In addition to being named Player of the Year, Hernandez also was honored as ESU’s only first-team All-America selection. Hernandez was named first-team to both the ABCA All-America squad and also the Daktronics All-America team.
Two other Hornets were selected as second-team All-Americans: outfielders Eric Shortell and Brian Majors.
Shortell was named second team on the ABCA and Daktronics squads after hitting .357 with an MIAA-record 23 home runs, 86 RBI and 33 stolen bases.
Majors, meanwhile, was a Daktronics second-team selection after hitting .423 with a conference-record 107 hits.
Majors named Academic All-American
Emporia State outfielder Brian Majors was named an ESPN The Magazine second-team Academic All-American on Tuesday by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Majors is ESU’s second Academic All-American of the schoolyear, as Michelle Stueve also earned the same honor.
Majors has a 3.78 cumulative grade-point average in Physics. He also had a 29-game hitting streak and was named first-team All-MIAA and first-team All-Central Region.
