Going to med school

Hanna Peterson of Emporia has been accepted into the University of Kansas School of Medicine where she will begin classes in August. She is a 2004 graduate of Emporia High School and will graduate with top honors from Washburn University on Saturday. During the summer of 2007, Peterson traveled abroad and attended classes at Cambridge University in Cambridge, England. She currently serves as vice president of the Tri Beta Biological Honor Society and works for the Ronald McDonald House in Topeka. She is the daughter of Ed and Janet Peterson of Emporia. She is the granddaughter of Betty Rice of Emporia and Ed and Patricia Peterson of Osage City.

Receives master’s degree

Kevin L. Briggs of Emporia recently received a master’s degree in health services administration from the University of Kansas and also received the 2008 Professional Development Award from the KU Department of Health Policy and Management. Briggs graduated earlier from the University of Kansas with two bachelor’s degrees, one in nursing. His research practicum was “A Comparative analysis and Description of the Swedish Healthcare System and Nursing Practice with the United States.” He works for the Shawnee Mission Hospital. Briggs, the son of Albert Lee and Gerri Briggs of Emporia and formerly of Reading, is a graduate of Northern Heights High School.

Completes honors

Anne Catherine Kretsinger, who received a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from the University of Kansas in May 2008, also was a participant in the KU cording ceremony which honors those seniors who have completed the University Honors Program and the University Scholars Program. She is the daughter of W. Brock and Mary Kretsinger and a graduate of Emporia High School.

Place in soil contest

Paul Hartley of Emporia, a graduate student in agronomy at Kansas State University in Manhattan, received sixth place honors at the 2008 national contest as a member of the K-State Soil Judging Team. The KSU Soil Judging Team received first place overall at the 2008 national contest.

Leah Ferdinand of Reading, senior at Kansas State University in Manhattan, who is studying agronomy, received second place honors as a member of the K-State Soil Judging Team at the contest.

In honor society

Andrew Reece Roland of Emporia was one of 47 Washburn University students recently inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi national honor society. Roland, a graduate of Emporia High School, is a junior studying public administration, nonprofit management and economics. He is the son of Dan and Sharon Roland of Emporia.

Anna Miller of Council Grove, a junior at Kansas State University in Manhattan, who is studying accounting, was selected as a returning member to serve on the 2008 Homecoming Student Committee to assist with the Oct. 19-25 KSU Homecoming Week. She is the daughter of Bill and Debbie Miller.

Outstanding senior

A student from this area recognized for excellence by the KSU College of Agriculture was Christina Surintan Clariday of Cottonwood Falls, co-winner of the 2007-2008 Neil Drabbe Leadership Award for outstanding senior in bakery science and management. A graduate of Chase County High School, Clariday was honored at the recent Agriculture Awards Assembly. She also received her bachelor’s degree at the May commencement ceremonies.

Kelsie Ball of Eureka, student at Kansas State University studying family studies and human services was named a new member of K-State Silver Key for 2008-2009, a sophomore leadership honorary group emphasizing community service.

Jamie Ball of Eureka, a junior student at Kansas State University studying biology, was named a new member of K-State Blue Key Senior Honor Society for 2008-2009. She has received several honors, is a cancer research scholar and has received a Terry C. Johnson Cancer Center research grant. Both women are graduates of Eureka High School and daughters of Keith and Debbie Ball of Eureka.

Going to Washington

Crystal Hinterweger of Lebo and Brandon Doebele of New Strawn will attend the 48th annual Government In Action Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. from June 12 through June 19. The two students competed for the trip and were selected and will be sponsored by Lyon-Coffey County Electric Cooperative. They will join 1,500 high school students from 45 states selected by their local rural electric cooperatives.
