Pittsburg-Colgan continued its dominance in the 2-1A State baseball tournament with a 10-0 run-rule victory over St. Marys in Saturday’s championship game at Soden’s Grove in Emporia.
It was the Panthers’ fifth straight 2-1A baseball title.
Colgan was barely challenged in its three games, winning by a combined score of 33-1. All three of the Panthers’ games were shortened because of the run-rule.
After scratching across a run in the first on a sacrifice fly by Willie Watt, Jesse Watt extended the lead in the third.
With a runner on, Watt blasted a two-run home run well over the wall in right, pushing the lead to 3-0.
Colgan ended the game with a seven-run fifth.
With two outs, the Panthers had seven consecutive batters reach safely. That included doubles from Jake Edwards and Michael Mitchelson and singles from Michael Hayes, Stuart Jeck and Kenny Wachter.
Wachter’s two-run single to center put the run-rule into effect.
Freshman pitcher Nate Arnold kept his cool after a shaky start, as he walked the first two batters before retiring 14 of the next 15.
The right-hander ended with eight strikeouts, which included a three-strikeout inning in the second.
