Emporia High boys win Class 5A State title

Saturday, May 24, 2008

WICHITA -- On the strength of two titles each from Brandon Childs and Jacob Davies, plus a gutsy performance from the 4x400 relay squad, the Emporia High boys took home the program's first State Championship at the State track and field meet at Cessna Stadium on Saturday.

The bulk of Emporia's scoring came from the heavy-hitting senior duo of Childs and Davies, as Childs won State titles in the triple jump and the high jump on Friday, while Davies won the 1,600- and 800-meter runs on Saturday. The pair also turned in two third-place showings, as Childs was third in the long jump and Davies was third in the 400.

When added to Mark Kolmer's second-place finish in the javelin on Saturday and Caydrick Bloomquist's runner-up finish in the pole vault on Friday, the EHS boys entered the final event of the day -- the 4x400 relay -- in a tie for first place with Bonner Springs at 68 points.

However, Bonner Springs did not have a team entered in the 4x400 relay, meaning Emporia needed to place just seventh or higher to claim the team championship. The quartet of Taylor Euler, Davies, Tyler Tilton and Kolmer delivered, finishing sixth in a time of 3 minutes, 28.35 seconds to give the EHS boys the team title over Bonner Springs by two points, 70-68.

"We had a lot of faith in each other, and we just wanted to wrap it up and put it together -- this good track meet we've had," said Kolmer, who ran the anchor leg of the 4x400. "We wanted to claim what's ours -- the 5A State championship."

Other highlights for EHS on Saturday Sarah Kolmer placing second in the girls triple jump (36-11 1/4) and Michaela Reynolds finishing third in the 1,600-meter run in a time of 5:18.15.

Also, Jenna Stanbrough came in ninth in the 800-meter run (2:24.86), the boys 4x800 relay team of Tilton, Asher Delmott, Andrew Wayman and Tyler Anliker placed 10th (8:28.72), Andrew Heerman placed ninth in the long jump (19-11), Brian Dorsey placed 14th in the long jump (18-4), and Troy Pierce finished 15th in the shot put (43-5 1/4).
