After Sondra Burden’s Studio of Fine Arts performed the popular Disney production “High School Musical” last year, it’s moving on to the sequel.
The studio will present “High School Musical 2” at Flint Hills Technical College at 7 p.m. Wednesday before taking its annual trip to Branson, Mo., to perform in three different venues.
The sequel features the kids of “High School Musical” getting jobs at a country club during the summer after school and preparing for the country club’s annual talent show as they deal with their romantic adventures. Justin Richardson will portray the male lead, Troy Bolton, while Geneva Anders will play the female lead, Gabriella Montez. Delano Mendoza, who portrays Ryan Evans, also is responsible for the show’s choreography. Victoria Edwards plays Sharpay Evans.
“Of course, Justin and Geneva look just like the characters,” Burden said. “Because she’s kind of Ecuadorian descent and everything. But they’re as good as the people that sing in the movies — that’s all there is to it. I’m excited.”
Performers who don’t have lead parts in “High School Musical” will perform country solos at the tech college. The studio then heads to Branson next week for the fourth straight year. From May 30 to June 1, it will perform shows at the Legends Family Theater, the Pierce Arrow Theater, and Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede.
“And we’ll do some of ‘High School Musical 2,’ but we also do current country tunes, because that’s what they like down there,” Burden said. “You know, some Carrie Underwood and all that, Taylor Swift. You have to keep up.”
