EMS students turn out in force for Fun Run Against Drugs

Twenty-five retiring teachers and school support staff members were guests of honor at the annual Emporia Public Schools Staff Recognition on Monday. Together, the 2008 retirees have more than 600 years of service to the Emporia schools.

Superintendent John Heim and Board of Education Member Angie Schreiber presented service awards to 39 employees with 15, 25 and 35 years of service and presented University of Kansas Service Awards to 14 teachers and administrators with 25 years in education.

Emporia National Education Association gave special recognition to Emporia Master Teacher Glenda Priest, an Emporia High School mathematics teacher.

Emporia High School language arts teacher Dee Schwinn introduced the 2008 ENEA $1,000 scholarship recipients, Hannah Stair and Ashley Brooks.

Stair, the daughter of Kenneth and Lynette Stair, graduated this year and will major in elementary education at Emporia State University. She has been active in class boards, theater and Girl Scouts and was a math tutor.

Brooks, also an EHS graduate, majors in education at ESU and is preparing to student teach. She has been active in ESU Ambassadors, KNEA, Teachers of Tomorrow, UAC, Sigma, Sigma, Sigma, YES program tutor and SPURS.  She is the daughter of Vickie and Eddie Brooks.  Retiring staff members are: Kay Neill, science teacher, EHS; Eve Ott, paraeducator, Flint Hills Special Education Cooperative; Janice Briggs, enrichment services teacher, FHSEC; Alice Aman, paraeducator, EHS; Vickie Hedrick, paraeducator, FHSEC; Cindy Stephen, counselor, EHS; Eleanor Brewer, 3rd grade teacher, Riverside; Shelley Craig, second grade teacher, Village; Scharla Jones, food service, Riverside; Debra Schneider, fourth grade teacher, Riverside; Sherril Crow, language arts teacher, EHS; Marvin Nance, Spanish teacher, Emporia Middle School; Judy Rockley, team leader, FHSEC; Anita O’Dell, secretary, Lowther North Intermediate School; Rita Andersen, paraeducator, EMS; Jerre Hollis, special education teacher, FHSEC; David Krumme, district operations/data manager; Karen Meyers, paraeducator, FHSEC; Shirley Langley, special education teacher, Village; Rita Romine, instructional coach/strategist, Riverside; Barbara Lyons, first grade teacher, Timmerman; Susan Hernandez, district assistant superintendent for business; Carolyn Koch, district literacy projects coordinator; Carl Stueve, science teacher, EHS; and James Hannon, social sciences teacher, EHS.
