Memorial Day Weekend — the official start to summer and the official release of The Gazette’s annual Discover section.
You’ll find the special section inside today’s paper, with some changes we hope you enjoy.
For years, Discover has been our way of sharing with Emporia-area residents things to do locally, while also educating those traveling through our town about things they may want to stop and enjoy. This year, however, we put more emphasis on ways to fill the summer days all week long, especially for parents of latch-key children.
We’ve compiled lists of activities all around the area that can fill the days of elementary-age children instead of having them home watching TV or playing video games. There are also fun things for preschool age children to do with moms and dads at home during the summer and tired of hearing “I’m bored.”
Even junior high and high school age students can add activities to their schedules that are easy to bike or drive to themselves.
And, no, we didn’t leave out adults or families.
The Emporia Arts Council is offering classes for all ages. And we’ve put together useful information about lakes throughout the area for those who want to escape town for a few hours or a few days to swim, fish or camp.
We hope you enjoy our new Discover section. Be sure to keep it handy to use throughout the summer.
Keep checking The Gazette daily for updated events or new events that weren’t planned in time to be included in Discover.
