Summer classes are beginning at the Emporia Arts Council, 618 Mechanic St., with classes for children from ages 2 to 5, 6 to 11, 12 to 16 and 17 to adult. Beginning Tuesday (May 27) will be Beginners Wheel Throwing (ages 6-11); Wheel Throwing Techniques (ages 12-16); Basic Book Making; and Illustrating (each, 17-adult). Beginning Wednesday will be Beginners Wheel Throwing (12-16) and Wheel Throwing Techniques (17-adult). Other wheel throwing classes will be offered later in the summer. The Summer Theatre Camp (ages 8-12) in conjunction with the Emporia Recreation Center, will be held from July 21 through July 25, with the registration deadline of June 11. Fees must be prepaid to hold a space in the classes. There is limited enrollment. To register, call 343-6473.

Music at library

“Metamorphosis of Music” will be presented at 11 a.m. June 3 at the Gridley Branch of Coffey County Library. Lunch will be served after the program. Musician Randy Bevard of Iola, who has taught guitar for eight years, will talk about how popular music has changed over the last 50 years. He also will perform songs, give guitar tips and answer questions. The program and lunch are free of charge. For more information, call (620) 836-3905.

Quilt show

The Sunflower Piecemakers Quilt Guild of Ottawa will present their 24th annual Quilt Show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 7 and 8 at the Ottawa Middle School. There is a $3 admission fee; children under 12 accompanied by an adult, no charge. There will be a special display of the Spring 2007 Hoffman Challenge Quilt winners and winners from the MoKan Longarm Machine Quilters Challenge of 2008, along with quilts made by members of the Ottawa guild. Members will be working on projects and will share tips and techniques. Vendors will sell a variety of items. The annual miniature quilt auction will begin at 3 p.m. June 8 with about 45 small quilts and wall hangings donated by members. Proceeds will go to the Franklin County Historical Society. Symphony tickets

Season tickets are now on sale for the 63rd season of the Topeka Symphony Orchestra, with all concerts held in White Concert Hall on the Washburn University campus. “Sounds of Celebration” is the theme for the season, which includes four Masterworks programs and three Discovery concerts.
