Emporia State Youth Baseball Camps
Emporia State baseball coach Bob Fornelli and his staff have teamed up with Emporia Recreation to offer a baseball camp for young ball players. Camps are offered for children 5-9 years of age and will concentrate on pitching and catching as well as hitting and defense.
Camp for ball players 10-14 years of age will concentrate on all aspects of the game. Come ready to have a good time and learn the fundamentals of baseball. Don’t forget to bring your glove, hat and shoes. Camp will be held at Glennen Field at the Trusler Sports Complex.
The camps will run June 16-19 with ages 5 to 9 from 9-11 a.m.; 10 to 14 years from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Cost for each camp is $50. The deadline to register is June 13. For information or to register, call the Emporia Recreation Commission at 340-6300.

Lady Hornets
Camp of Champions
Emporia State Lady Hornets basketball coach Brandon Schneider will offer his Camp of Champions throughout the area this summer for boys in grades Kindergarten through eighth and girls in Kindergarten through 12th grade. Each two-day camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes individual instruction on ball handling, shooting, fundamentals and defense, plus shooting competitions and 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 play.
Each camp costs $75 and there’s a $25 nonrefundable deposit. The locations and dates of camps, with their registration deadlines, are:
F Emporia — June 9-10 (deadline May 30) and July 14-15 (deadline July 7)
F Eureka — June 11-12 (deadline June 2)
F Burlington — June 16-17 (deadline June 6)
F Parsons — June 18-19 (deadline June 9)
F Holton — June 23-24 (deadline June 13)

Emporia High Summer Football Camp
Emporia High School head coach Bill Lowe and staff will conduct a summer football camp for children age 9-14. The camp will focus on the fundamentals of football in a fun and exciting environment.
The camp will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 28 through 30 at the Emporia High football field. All kids who participate in the football camp will NOT have to attend the mandatory workout for fifth-sixth grade tackle football program.

Emporia High Spartan Volleyball Camp
Join new Emporia High volleyball coach Betsy Martling as she holds the Spartan Volleyball Camp this summer.
The Spartan Volleyball Camp is open to all volleyball players regardless of previous experience. The camp will involve teaching the basic fundamentals of the sport, including: serving, passing, setting, attacking and defense. These skills will be taught in a step-by-step manner and applied in team drills and competition.
Campers will play on lowered nets and with lightweight volleyballs/beachballs.
Current and former EHS volleyball players will be on hand to assist with the camp.
There are two sections for the camp. There is a Kindergarten through third grade camp on June 23-26 from 9:30-11 a.m. each day at the Emporia High School gymnasium. The second section is for campers in grades fourth through sixth and will run on June 23-26 from 9:30-11 a.m. each day at the Emporia High School gymnasium.
There is a $35 enrollment fee, which includes a camp T-shirt. Late enrollments will be accepted at the door, but T-shirt sizes cannot be guaranteed at that time.

Emporia State
Volleyball Camp
Emporia State University’s volleyball coaches and players will offer a resident camp and specialty camp this summer at ESU’s physical education building.
Hornet Way Camp from June 23-26 will work on all skills with girls being divided into two groups — grades six to nine and grades nine to 12 for advanced skills.
Resident athletes will live in ESU dorms during the camp. Commuter athletes also are welcome. Cost for the resident camp is $240, which includes meals and lodging; commuters pay $195.
A $50 deposit is required with the balance due at registration, noon to 1 p.m. June 23.
The staff will offer half-day specialty camps from 9 a.m. to noon June 28. Girls in grades six through 12 can choose to attend setter or hitter camps. Cost is $60. Full application fee is due in advance or at the door. Registration is 8 to 9 a.m. June 28.
Campers at all ESU volleyball camps receive a customized ESU volleyball.

Emporia State
Tennis Camp
John Cayton, tennis coach at Emporia State, will offer a weeklong tennis camp June 23-27. The week caps off with participation in the ESTA Tournament for ages 10 through 18.
Resident camp for ages 12 to 18 costs $395. Full-day camp, from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day for ages 10 to 18, costs $295. Half-day camp, 8:45 to 11:45 a.m. for ages 8 to 18, costs $145. There’s a 10 percent discount for registrations with $100 deposit submitted by May 30. The deadline to register is June 9.

Juniors and Ladies
Golf Clinics
Kent Roper, a life member of the Professional Golfers Association, will hold two golf clinics in June.
The first clinic is a junior golf camp at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course on June 3-5 from 9 a.m. to noon each day.
The junior camp is for children ages 7 and up and costs $50.
The camp will teach the basic fundamentals of the game. Participants can bring their own clubs if they have them; otherwise, clubs will be provided.
The second camp is a ladies clinic, also at the EMGC.
There are three sessions — June 1, 8 and 15 — with a cost of $15 per session. The clinics will run from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on each day. Participants can choose how many sessions to attend.
The clinic is designed to help women improve their golf games.

Senior/Super Senior Golf Championship
The Emporia Municipal Golf Course will be the site of the 21st Annual Senior/Super Senior Golf Championship on June 10-11, with a practice day scheduled for June 9.
The tournament is sponsored by the Kansas Women's Golf Association. Senior participants range from age 50-69; super seniors are 70 and older. A total of 124 golfers from around the state are expected to register for the event.
The tournament will have a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on both days. A social hour and banquet will be held in the evening on June 10 at the Emporia Country Club. A special awards luncheon will be held at the golf course following the tournament.

Lyon County 4-H
Fundraising Shoot
There will be a Lyon County 4-H Shotgun Shooting Sports 2008 Fundraising Shoot on Sunday, June 1 at the Locust Point Gun Club near Lyndon.
The shoot will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the shoot consisting of 50 targets (sporting clays).
To get to Locust Point, from Lyndon, take 75 North for four miles after crossing the junction of Highways 68, 268 and 31. Turn east on old Highway 75 to the first dirt road that will take you north.
That road will turn directly east in approximately 100 yards into 205th Street. Follow 205th until you reach Berryton Road. It is 2 1/2 miles east of Highway 75. Take Berryton Road north for approximately 3/4 miles until you see the skeet field on the east side of the road and the big red barn on the west.
The cost is a $30-per-round donation to Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports.
Aquatic Club Summer Season Practices
Summer season practices for the Emporia Aquatic Club begin next Tuesday.
Because of cool temperatures, morning practices (7-8:30 a.m.) will be held at the Emporia High School pool during June only.
All evening practices (6:30-8 p.m.) and morning practices after June will be held at the Jones Aquatic Center pool.
The highlight of the summer season will be a meet on July 19-20 at the Jones Aquatic Center with more than 200 swimmers expected from across Kansas.
The Emporia Aquatic Club is a year-round competitive swim club open to all ages and skill levels. If interested in joining, please contact coach Melissa Williams at 341-0127.

Summer Camps
The Lady Spartan Summer Basketball Camps will take place during the first two weeks of June.
The camp for girls from Kindergarten through second grade will be 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on June 9-12 and will cost $40; the camp for third- through fifth-grade girls will be 8:30-10:30 a.m. on June 9-12 and will cost $45; and the camp for sixth- through eighth-graders will be 3-5:30 p.m. on June 2-5 and will cost $45. All campers will receive a T-shirt.
Entry forms for the camp will be accepted from now until June 1. Forms are available at Emporia High School, Mike's Sporting Goods, Jock's Nitch and also at area schools.

Flint Hills Catbackers
Golf Tournament
The Flint Hills Catbackers Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, May 31, at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course. Cost is $70 per person, which includes green fee, cart, lunch and refreshments.
The four-person scramble will have cash prizes, hole-in-one contests, mulligans, hucklebuck and more.
Sign-in is between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at 8:30.

Summer Camps
The Emporia High basketball program has several summer programs taking place over the course of the next month.
The Little Swisher (beginner's only) Camp for kids second grade and younger will be 9:30-11:30 a.m. on June 16-18. Lunch is included. Cost is $40, and deadline is June 11.
The Shooter Extreme Mini-Camp is set for 1-3 p.m. on June 16-18. Cost is $40, and deadline is June 11.

Basketball League
Registration is now being taken for the Emporia Summer Basketball League, which will take place on Mondays through Thursdays during the month of July at Emporia High School.
The league is for boys and girls from Kindergarten through eighth grade. Organized area teams are encouraged to attend.
Teams will be set according to age group with a 10-game guarantee. Players might play two games in one night. The first meeting is July 3 for team organization.
Cost is $60, with a family rate of $20 for additional children. Deadline to enter is June 27.

TRYSA Soccer
Summer Camp
TRYSA will be conducting a week-long summer soccer camp from June 9 through June 13. The camp will be run by Challenger British Soccer, with coaches coming from Britain to work with the kids.
The camp is open to boys and girls ages 3 through 14. Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. for 3- to 4-year-olds, 10:30 a.m. to noon for 5- to 6-year-olds and 9 a.m. to noon or 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for 7- to 14-year-olds.
All campers receive a camp T-shirt and soccer ball.
TRYSA also is looking for host families for the coaches. Host families receive a discount on their registration fee.

Emporia Track Club Youth Meets
Two Emporia Track Club youth track and field meets are scheduled to be held at Emporia State's Welch Stadium this spring.
The first meet will be on Tuesday, May 27, and the second will be on Tuesday, June 10.
The meets begin at 6 p.m., and no pre-registration is needed. Anyone can enter. The meets are low-key and perfect for beginning track and field athletes.
