AMERICUS — A rural Americus man died this morning after a fire got out of control.
Karl Kayser, 94, was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire, 2659 Road F.
According to sheriff’s officers at the scene, Kayser and his son were burning on the property when a boxcar and smaller outbuilding caught fire. The call for help from firefighters came in at 9:17 a.m. At some point, Kayser sat down, then he fell over.
Firefighters from Americus began performing CPR on Kayser about 9:35 a.m. and called for a Lyon County-Emporia ambulance. They continued doing CPR until the ambulance arrived and Kayser was pronounced dead.
At one point, a call over the scanner indicated that a firefighter was down at the scene, but that turned out not to be the case, officers said.
The boxcar and the outbuilding were destroyed when the fire got out of control.
