The 12-and-under Energy softball team went 4-0 last weekend to win the Derby Invitational.

Emporia played four games in a round-robin tournament on Saturday and was seemingly in control from the first pitch. The Energy took victories over the Great Bend Quicksilver (9-3), the Garden City Spirit (7-3), the Dirt Divas (11-1) and the Craze (11-4).

In the opening game of the day, the Energy cranked out 14 hits with Emily Giffin going 4-for-4, Allie Belford going 3-for-3 and Lexi Herb going 2-for-2. Giffin got the win by striking out six and allowing only two hits.

In Game Two, Paige Turney led the way by going 3-for-3 with two singles and a triple. Amanda Crone added two hits and also got the pitching win, as she struck out six and allowed just two hits.

Emporia had 13 hits in Game Three against the Dirt Divas. Giffin lead the way with an inside-the-park home run. Ashley Jackson and Katie Weiser each added a double, while Crone, Kate Decker, Turney and Brooke Perry added a hit apiece. In the circle, Giffin got the win and had six strikeouts while giving up only one hit.

In the final matchup against the undefeated Craze — the game that turned out to be the championship game — the Energy jumped out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back.

Crone had a home run, while Weiser and Belford each added a double in the game. Crone pitched the final game as well and got the win.

The 12s play their next tournament at home on May 31 and June 1 at Whittier Park.

Energy U-14s post

1-3 record at Derby

The Energy U-14s went 1-3 in their first tournament of the season at Derby.

Emporia’s one victory came against the Kryptonite by a score of 6-4. The game was won on aggressive base running, with runs scored by Amanda Belford, Lydia Roemer, Allie Lanzrath, Jordon Kaiser, and Morgan Nail.

In the second game against Butler, the U-14s were held scoreless. In Game Three, Kaiser had the only run scored against the Lookouts on an RBI hit by Janet Weaver.

In the Energy’s fourth and final game, the team got down early but battled back in the third inning with hits from Alee McCoy, Allie Lanzrath, Emily Giffin and Megan Olsson to tie the score at 8.

Emporia fell behind in the bottom of the fifth when the Bandits scored one to make the score 9-8.

Allie and Reagan Lanzrath pitched for the U-14s in Game One, while Jordon Kaiser and Emily Giffin also were in the pitching rotation.

Other members of the U-14 team are Alice Tunks-Jones, Kandice Shriner, and Emily Samuels.

The 14s play in Council Grove in a one-day tournament on Saturday.

Emporia Energy U-10s

go 2-2 in Derby

The Energy 10-and-under team traveled to Derby this weekend and came away with a fourth-place finish after going 2-2.

Emporia opened Saturday with a 9-3 loss against the Lytning, but ended the day with an 8-6 win against the Blaze. On Sunday, the team started with a 7-6 win against the Mulvane Wildcats and ended with a 19-5 loss against the Wichita Stingers.

In Game One, the Energy kept it close until the last inning, only trailing 4-3. But the Lytning put together five runs in the bottom of the inning to pull away for the win.

Abby Weiser added two of the Energy runs, while Kylee Giffin had the other.

Saturday’s late game was a back-and-forth affair. Emporia got down 3-0 in the first inning, but in the second, the team exploded for six runs to take the lead. The Energy added two more runs in the third.

Abbey Jackson went 2-for-2 with a single and a double. Morgan McCoy had a double. Emma Harmon, Weiser, Jade Smith, Sierra Potter and Haylee Boulanger each had a hit in the win.

In Sunday’s action, the Energy woke the bats up early with eight hits, including a double by Morgan Holmes. Weiser had nine strikeouts from the pitching circle and got the win against the Wildcats.

The Energy was stung early and often in its final matchup on Sunday, though. The Stingers scored six runs in each of the first three innings. The 10s still managed two runs in the second inning and another three runs in the third.

Harmon went 4-for-9 on the weekend. Jackson went 4-for-8. Jade Smith had a breakout weekend, getting five hits in seven at-bats.

The 10s will play next in Emporia at Whittier Fields on May 31 and June 1.
