Another candidate has filed for the county commission seat that will be vacated by Marshall Miller.
Teresa Walters, executive director of Emporians for Drug Awareness, filed Monday as a Republican candidate for that position. In a phone interview this morning, Walters said she’s been involved politically for a while and this is another way for her to get involved.
“I’ve kind of been on the outskirts of different political campaigns both state and locally and I think it’s a great opportunity to get even further involved in the community,” Walters said.
Walters and her family first moved to Emporia in the late 1970s, Walters said. She and her husband, Francis, who died in 2005, returned in 1990 when they purchased the Wendy’s on Sixth Avenue.
“We were able to select from several communities where a Wendy’s restaurant was for sale and we chose Emporia,” Walters said. “... We had been so impressed with it when we had lived here earlier. Emporia is a great place to own a business and raise a family.”
Another Wendy’s was built in Prairie Port Plaza in 1998. The family sold both stores when Francis Walters became terminally ill and died.
Teresa Walters is heavily involved in the community and is secretary of the Noon Rotary Club, a member of the League of Women Voters, a volunteer and board member for Hand in Hand Hospice and is a YouthFriends member. She has two adult children, Aaron who lives in Chicago and Katrina who lives in Kansas City.
Walters said she is looking forward to running for the county commission seat.
“... The role of commissioner is one I am eager to take on because I feel fully and uniquely prepared to fulfill its obligations,” she said. “Today, Lyon County is at a crossroads — we must match our budget to the vision of its people in order to improve our quality of life. It will take a special dedication to make this happen.”
Lloyd Stone will be treasurer for Walter’s campaign.

Teresa sounds like a wonderful person, and a serious advocate for Emporia.
Those of you in Hartford, Olpe, Neosho Rapids, Allen, Admire and elsewhere had better get a good candidate entered in the race.
Otherwise you need to learn to spell consolidation.
Nothing like sending your tax dollar to Emporia....I'm sure they'll find a way to spend it.
