Nebraska-Omaha 17, Emporia State 14, FINAL

Saturday, May 17, 2008

The Emporia State baseball team fell short in an offensive slugfest Saturday night, losing 17-14 to Nebraska-Omaha in an elimination game at the Central Regional at the Trusler Sports Complex.

The loss ends ESU's season at 50-10.

The two teams combined for 31 hits and 13 extra base hits to go along with eight home runs, as nine pitchers saw time between the two teams. But it was the ESU pitchers that struggled the most, as five Hornet hurlers combined to give up 19 hits — including five home runs — and gave up big innings of three, four and seven runs to UNO to put ESU in a hole it could never get climb out of despite several rallies.

The Mavericks' Chris Weimer went 4-for-6 at the plate with two home runs and three RBI while Dustin Koca went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI as well.

Anthony Dreiling led ESU offensively with a 3-for-4 performance, driving in five runs — four of which came on a third-inning grand slam.

The Mavericks advance to face Central Missouri in the championship game at noon Sunday. An if-neccesary game will be played 30 minutes following the first game should UNO defeat Central Missouri.

I know it was a tough loss when this is not how you want your season to end, but keep your heads high because you had a great season and made us very proud!
