Hornets loses national championship game

Saturday, May 17, 2008

HOUSTON — Lizzy Prescott threw her second consecutive shutout against Emporia State, leading Humboldt State to a 1-0 victory in Saturday’s national championship game.

The Hornets finished the season with a 48-17 record.

After throwing a one-hitter against ESU on Wednesday, Prescott came back with a five-hitter on Saturday, walking none while striking out 10.

Natalie Galletly put HSU on top, driving a two-out home run just over the wall in left field to make it 1-0 in the top of the first.

Neither team would score after that.

ESU’s best chance came in the bottom of the sixth. Miranda Campbell lined a two-out single to bring up April Huddleston.

On an 0-1 pitch, Huddleston sent a deep drive down the left-field line.

The ball sailed over the fence, but ended up foul by a matter of inches.

Three pitches later, Huddleston struck out to end the threat.

It is the second time in three years that the Hornets have finished as the national runners-up.
