Burlington

The Coffey County Republican reported that a hot mix overlay project is scheduled to begin next week on the Wolf Creek Generating Station access road. Coffey County commissioners recently signed a contract with SE-Kan Asphalt Services, of Gas, to work on the four mile project, which starts at U.S. 75 and 17th Road and continues east to Wolf Creek. The county will pay $455,975.10 to mill one inch of asphalt and overlay two inches of hot mix asphalt.

Melvern

The Coffey County Republican reported that volunteers in the community of Melvern pulled together and planted 65 trees, built a 20-foot long walking bridge across a ravine, cleaned up 40 acres of abandoned land and developed seven miles of hiking, biking and walking trails. Residents of Melvern completed the work as a part of their commitment to protecting natural resources and building a healthy, sustainable community.

Council Grove

The Council Grove Republican reported that Council Grove High School’s FFA poultry judging team won in the State Career Development events at Kansas State University and now will represent Kansas at the National FFA convention in October in Indianapolis, Ind. The team members are Jeri Sigle; Kirstin Glick; Dani Lautt; and Kris Wittman.
