Traffic enforcement intensifies
The Emporia Police Department will conduct high intensity traffic enforcement efforts in specific areas of the city through the remainder of May.
According to a press release from the Emporia Police Department, traffic enforcement officers will select areas along Industrial Road from Highway 50 to 24th Avenue in an effort to curb speeding and traffic signal violations.
Additional locations will be school zones and other high density traffic locations.
Olpe Banquet and Dance
The Olpe Alumni Banquet and Dance will be held June 14 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Olpe, with a social hour starting at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m. and dance afterward.
Former football coach Bob Von Stein will be the guest speaker. The event is open to all alumni at a cost of $20 per person. Reservations and checks may be sent to Marie Hammond, 212 E. State Road 99, Olpe, KS 66865.
Reception for long-time educators
Two long-time Emporia educators, Susan Hernandez and Carolyn Koch, will be guests of honor at a retirement reception from 3:30 to 5 p.m. May 22, at the Mary Herbert Education Center, 1700 W. Seventh Ave.
Hernandez, assistant superintendent for business, is retiring after 31 years with the Emporia public schools. Koch, literacy projects coordinator, is retiring after 32 years in the district and 35 years in public education. The reception is open to the public.
Scouts and Community Theatre
Girls in fourth, fifth and sixth grades are eligible to take part in “... where the sidewalk ends,” a project that will teach about “creating, preparing and performing for a theatre production,” a news release stated. The event is sponsored by the Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland and Community Theatre of Emporia.
It will be from 1 to 5 p.m. May 29 at the Amend Girl Scout Center, 12th Avenue and Burlingame Road.
The cost is $8 per person, with a limit of 25 participants.

Stained glass windows
The Dedication of the Flint Hills Stained Glass Windows will be held at 10:30 a.m May 24 at the Eureka Public Library.
The dedication is open to the public, which will have an opportunity to “meet the people who made this beautiful and unique contribution to our community possible,” a news release stated. For more information, call (620) 583-6222.
A career in law
A PreLegal Camp workshop, for high school students who want to know about law as a career, will be held July 16 through 18 at Washburn University in Topeka. Registration is $100 each person.
According to a news release, students will experience teaching methods of legal education, hear presentations from practicing lawyers and law students, tour the Kansas Supreme Court, Judicial Center and Brown vs. Board of Education National Historical site and compete in a mock trial.

Or a career in business
Camp B.L.U.E. (Business Leaders Understanding Entrepreneurship), a three-day workshop designed for high school students who later want to own their own businesses, will be held July 14 through 16 at Washburn University. Students will learn about decision-making and recognize opportunities to succeed, a Washburn news release stated.
Faculty members from the WU School of Business and College of Arts and Sciences will lead the program. Successful entrepreneurs and community leaders also will give presentations and students will tour several local entrepreneurial companies. To register, see www.washburn.edu/admissions. EHS Class of 1998
Plans are under way for the Emporia High School Class of 1998’s 10-year reunion. New organization
Spirit 3, a consumer-run organization for those with mental illnesses, will meet from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday at the Emporia Public Library, 110 E. Sixth Ave. The topic of discussion will be “Starting Up Anew.” Those attending are to bring beverages; Papa John’s will donate pizzas, a news release stated. Education scholarships available
Alpha Theta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International will award two $500 scholarships for the 2008-2009 year. The scholarships are available to all women who are juniors or seniors in college and are majoring in education or an education-related field.
