Governor’s scholar
At the invitation of Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, Brianna Sage of Olpe was selected to attend the 25th annual Governor’s Scholars Award Program on May 4, 2008, in Topeka. The recognition ceremony honors the top academic one percent of Kansas high school seniors, selected from accredited public and private schools in the state.
Inducted in Topeka
Mary Oliver of Lebo attended the initiation ceremony April 13 at Washburn University for her granddaughter, Caley Onek. Onek was inducted into the Top Hat Chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta Society because she maintained at 3.5 or higher grade point average in her first year at the university. She was elected vice president of the Top Hat Chapter for 2008-2009. Onek is also a granddaughter of Louis and Patty Onek of Lebo.
Tallgrass winners
Local winners of the 2008 Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve Arts and Education contest were Luke Ikerd of Neosho Rapids Elementary School, who won second place for his essay, and Austin Cushman of Olpe Elementary School, who won second place for his artwork. The theme for the essay was “Understanding Our Prairie Ecosystem”; the theme for the artwork was “Springtime on the Prairie.” Ikerd and Cushman will receive Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve T-shirts and certificates of recognition signed by Mike Hayden, chairman of the Kansas Park Trust and former governor of Kansas.
On the honor roll
Mary C. Walker of Allen was named to the Fort Hays State University fall 2007 Dean’s Honor Roll. To be eligible, students must have enrolled in 12 or more credit hours and have a minimum grade point average of 3.6 for the semester.
Graduates in Oklahoma
Samuel J. Lochmann of Lebo received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and general criminal justice this month from the university of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Okla.
Diver is certified
Angela Boden of Lebo graduated in March with an Ultimate Diver Training certification from the Ocean Corporation of Houston, Texas. Boden is the daughter of Ruth Kelley and Larry Boden Sr.
