Going to med school
Hanna Peterson of Emporia has been accepted into the University of Kansas School of Medicine where she will begin classes in August. She is a 2004 graduate of Emporia High School and will graduate with top honors from Washburn University on Saturday. During the summer of 2007, Peterson traveled abroad and attended classes at Cambridge University in Cambridge, England. She currently serves as vice president of the Tri Beta Biological Honor Society and works for the Ronald McDonald House in Topeka. She is the daughter of Ed and Janet Peterson of Emporia. She is the granddaughter of Betty Rice of Emporia and Ed and Patricia Peterson of Osage City.
ESB scholarships
ESB Financial awarded three recipients of the Kansas Bankers Association’s Governor’s Scholars Award for 2008 with a $100 savings bond. Those awarded were Emporia High School seniors Samantha Nicole Kraft, daughter of Mark and Mary Craft; Matthew Christopher McAnarney, son of Mark and Amy McAnarney; and Micheala Renae Reynolds, daughter of Michael and Joyce Reynolds, all of Emporia. ESB Financial established its Award in 1986 in conjunction with the KBA program to honor the top one percent of Kansas high school seniors.
Order of the Purple
Ashley Dunn of Emporia will be one of the students honored at the Butler Community College 2008 Order of the Purple ceremony at 7 p.m. Friday at the El Dorado campus. There will be a reception after the ceremony. Students who are eligible must have completed 30 hours at Butler Community College and hold a 3.75 or higher grade point average.
Graduation honors
Top scholars from Emporia graduating with the University of Kansas class of 2008 on Sunday are Nidhi Patel, bachelor’s degree in microbiology, Endowment Merit Scholar, daughter of Narendra Patel; and Brianna Raye Sosa, bachelor’s degrees in applied behavioral science and psychology, National Hispanic Scholar, daughter of Robert and Jo Sosa. Both students are graduates of Emporia High School.
Graduation speaker
Christina Murray, graduate of Emporia High School and doctor of veterinary medicine candidate at Kansas State University in Manhattan, will present the reflections speech for the College of Veterinary Medicine at the commencement ceremony on Saturday.
Emporian to sing
Sarah Priest of Emporia, bachelor’s candidate in music education at Kansas State University in Manhattan, will sing the national anthem at KSU College of Arts and Sciences ceremony on Friday.
Honorable mention
Jeffrey Hicks of Emporia, a junior student at Kansas State University in Manhattan studying mechanical engineering and mathematics, received honorable mention in the K-State S. Thomas Parker Mathematics Competition. Hicks was awarded a cash prize and a certificate. The competition, also supported by the K-State Math Club, encourages KSU students to strengthen their mathematical skills and promote mathematics education.
