Today

The Emporia Chess Society meets from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Granada Coffee Company and from 1:30 to 4 p.m. every Saturday at Pyramid Pizza. All ages and skill levels are welcome, including children. There is no charge.

The Reading Lions Club meets at 7 p.m. at the Reading Community Building.

Tuesday

The Flint Hills Regional Quilt Guild meets at 10 a.m. the second Tuesday of every month at the Presbyterian West Campus, 1702 W. 15th Ave. Delores Rieck of Burlingame will be the guest speaker and give ideas about “Stitch As You Go.”

The Rotary Club meets at noon at the Emporia Country Club, 18th Avenue and Rural Street.

P.E.O. Chapter HY meets for a trip to the Tall Grass Prairie National Preserve and the Back Country Bus Tour (charge). Mary Fisher is the hostess. Lunch will be at the Emma Chase Cafe in Cottonwood Falls (dutch treat).

Single Adult Fellowship group meets at 6 p.m. every Tuesday at Coach’s, 2702 W. 15th Ave., during May. Information: Rufus Hobbs, 392-5780.

The Kiwanis Club meets at 6:15 p.m. in the Commander’s Room at the American Legion, 2921 W. 12th Ave.

The Emporia Duplicate Bridge Club meets at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Best Western Hospitality House, 3021 W. Highway 50. Information: Clara Elkins at 342-5274.

The Twin Rivers Chapter of Sweet Adelines meets at 7 p.m. in the basement of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 1408 W. 12th Ave. Information: 342-9419 or 342-4850, evenings.

Wednesday

The Sunrise Rotary Club meets at 7 a.m. at the Regency Gardens, 3021 W. Highway 50.

The International Association of Administrative Professionals meets at 6:30 p.m. at Newman Regional Health for dinner, with presentations at 7 p.m. Nadine Yust, 341-9979.

The Emporia Regional Quilters Guild meets at 6:30 p.m. at the new Lyon County Extension Office meeting room. Visitors are welcome.

Lyon County Chapter 36 Disabled American Veterans meets at 7:30 p.m. at the Army Reserve Center, 1412 E. Sixth Ave. The Auxiliary meets at 7:30 p.m. the fourth Wednesday of each month at the same location at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday

The Flint Hills Optimist Club meets at noon at the ESU Memorial Union.

The Hi-Noon Kiwanis Club meets at noon at the Emporia Country Club, 18th Avenue and Rural Street.

The Sertoma Club meets at noon at the American Legion, 2921 W. 12th Ave. Terri Summey will present the program. ESU flags will be flown Saturday for commencement.

Altrusa International of Emporia meets at 6 p.m. at the home of Joyce Davis. Co-hostesses will be Elaine Henrie and Joan Hummel. Shelley Hensley will present the program, “Miss Universe Pageant.”

Flint Hills Area Vietnam Veterans meets at 6 p.m. at American Legion Post 5, 2921 W. 12th Ave.

The Emporia Gardeners of America Club meets at 7 p.m. at the Sudlow home, west of Emporia, for a tour. There will be a business meeting, door prizes and refreshments. Members are to bring lawn chairs. For more information, call president Ken Johnson at 342-2254.

Saturday

The Emporia Airport Action Group meets at approximately 9:30 a.m. every Saturday in the main terminal at the Emporia Municipal Airport for “hangar talk,” coffee and doughnuts. “You are free to move about” the airport. Information: 342-3598

Sunday

The Flint Hills Chapter of the Old Time Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers meets from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Emporia Recreation Center, 313 W. Fourth Ave. Music is provided for dancing. Admission is by donation. Visitors are welcome.

May 19

The Emporia Social Service Club meets from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. the fourth Monday of every month at Fourth Avenue and Merchant Street, excluding the summer months. The club is a non-profit organization which sponsors Coats for Kids and Necessity Bags for the area schools, Baskets for Kids at Newman hospital and the Toy Store for needy families at Christmas. New members are always welcome. For more information, call Meredith at 342-8881.
