ROUNDUP: Winona State blasts its way to 8-1 victory over SMSU

Saturday, May 10, 2008

Sixth-seeded Winona State used power bats to advance to the winner’s bracket championship, blasting three home runs in an 8-1 victory over second-seeded Southwest Minnesota State on Friday.

It was the Warriors’ second straight win in the Regional tournament against a ranked opponent. Winona defeated No. 24 Central Missouri on Thursday before taking down No. 12 SMSU on Friday.

After a Chelsea Rosenow homer in the second made it 1-0, the Warriors blew the game open with a five-run third.

Each of the runs came via the longball. Mollie Bjelland connected on a three-run shot to right, and two batters later, Annie Stuedemann drove a two-run homer over the wall in left-center to make it 6-0.

Kristen Fossell picked up the victory, allowing just one run and six hits in her complete-game effort. She struck out five SMSU batters and walked just one.

Winona will face No. 6 Emporia State at 10 this morning. The winner of that game will advance to the Regional championship game at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

Minnesota State-Mankato 4, Washburn 2

Minnesota State-Mankato scored four runs in the first three innings and held on from there, taking a 4-2 victory over Washburn in an elimination game on Friday.

The fourth-seeded Mavericks scored one in the first, two in the second and one more in the third to build their lead.

Libbie Reichling started the offense, knocking an RBI double to left-center in the first inning.

Jess Anderson added her own run-scoring double in the second, and Lynndi Decker followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0.

Mallory Michel scored the team’s final run on a fielding error in the fourth.

Washburn came back in the sixth on a two-RBI single from Candi Madill, but it wouldn’t be enough.

Minnesota State’s Meagan Teal improved to 20-6, allowing two runs and six hits over seven innings.

Anderson and Reichling contributed two hits each for the Mavericks.

Minnesota-Mankato 2, SW Minnesota State 1

Lynndi Decker contributed the game-winning RBI in the top of the eighth as Minnesota-Mankato took a 2-1 victory over Southwest Minnesota State.

With the loss, the second-seeded Mustangs were eliminated from the tournament.

After a one-out triple from Jess Anderson, Decker followed with an infield single to the shortstop that drove in the run.

Megan Teal retired SMSU 1-2-3 in the eighth to preserve the win.

Teal took the victory in the circle, pitching three innings of no-hit relief. She added five strikeouts and had no walks.

SMSU mustered just two hits in the eight-inning contest.

Nebraska-Omaha 8, NW Missouri State 1

Fourth-seeded Nebraska-Omaha exploded for seven runs in the first three innings on its way to an easy 8-1 victory over seventh-seeded Northwest Missouri State in an elimination game on Friday night.

The Mavericks took control with a five-run second inning.

Brianna Cataudella started the frame with a solo home run, and Leslie Svoboda later added a three-run shot to make it 6-0.

Melissa Negrete went all seven innings for UNO, allowing four hits and one run while striking out four.

Northwest starter Cola Krueger went just 1 2/3 innings, giving up five hits and four runs.

UNO will take on Minnesota State-Mankato in the losers bracket at 12:15 this afternoon.
