Emporia High girls swimming and diving team places 2nd at league

Boosted by a pair of event victories, the Emporia High girls swimming and diving team came away with a second-place finish on Friday at the Centennial League Championships in Topeka.
Whitney Starr won the 200 individual medley and the team of Caitlin McGuire, Kathryn Scherich, Michelle Thompson and Hilary Larson won the 200 freestyle relay to help the Lady Spartans compile 414 points, putting EHS behind only league-champion Manhattan (446).
Starr’s victory in the individual medley was a resounding one, as she touched the wall in 2 minutes, 25.83 seconds, nearly 3 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Kelci Ankerholz of Washburn Rural. Starr also came through with a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly, touching the wall in 1:06.88.
As for the 200 free relay team, it won the event in a time of 1:49.12 to finish nearly 2 seconds ahead of Seaman.
Emporia’s other two relay squads fared well, as the 400 freestyle quartet of McGuire, Starr, Thompson and Larson finished second in a time of 3:59.58, while the 200 medley team of Taylor Mason, Jennie Loucks, Starr and Scherich placed third in a time of 2:09.34.
Individually, McGuire and Scherich produced a pair of top-five finishes in two events.
McGuire finished second in the 50 freestyle (26.30 seconds) and the 100 freestyle (58.36), while Scherich came in fourth in the 50 free (27.05) and fifth in the 100 free (1:02.31).
Larson picked up a second-place finish of her own with a runner-up showing in the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:38.32
Loucks placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.65) and Jalen Hollenbeck came in seventh in the 100 backstroke (1:17.49) to round out the top event finishers for EHS.
In the diving competition on Thursday, Carissa Schmitz placed third, Aubrey Armitage came in fourth and Hayley Fry was fifth.
For their efforts, Starr, McGuire and Larson each were named first-team All-Centennial League, while Scherich earned second-team honors.
