Saturday, May 10, 2008

The Emporia High track and field team came away with seven event titles on Friday at the Centennial League Championships at Shawnee Heights, led by the two-title days of both Brandon Childs and Jacob Davies.

Both the boys and girls squads finished second in the team standings, as the EHS girls totaled 111.5 points to fall just 5 1/2 points behind Topeka High (117), while the boys compiled 113.5 points to place behind Manhattan (139).

Childs nearly swept the jumping events, as he won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 6 inches and then won the triple jump with a distance of 45-9. Childs also finished second in the long jump with a best mark of 20-6.

As for Davies, he won the 1,600-meter run in a time of 4 minutes, 29.67 seconds and then took the title in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:59.30.

Angela Finch gave the EHS girls their lone victory on the track, as she won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.53 seconds.

The final event victories for Emporia High came in the pole vault, as Caydrick Bloomquist won the boys competition while Samantha Kraft won the girls event. Bloomquist vaulted 14-6 to win his title, while Kraft went at 10-6, which set a new league meet record.

Michaela Reynolds picked up a pair of second-place finishes in the distance events to Manhattan’s Marley Crusch, finishing the 1,600-meter run in a time of 5:16.67 before finishing the 3,200-meter run in a time of 11:28.09.

Other second-place showings came from Asher Delmott in the 3,200-meter run (9:57.72), Sarah Kolmer in the triple jump (36 feet, 2 3/4 inches) and Raelynn Pearson in the discus (117-3).

The next action for the EHS track and field team comes next Friday when Emporia High plays host to a Class 5A Regional at Welch Stadium.
