The Chase County baseball team swept Herington on Thursday night, taking a 10-3 victory in Game One before run-ruling the Railers in Game Two, 10-0, in six innings.
In the first game, after two Chase County errors allowed Herington to take a 1-0 lead after one-half inning of play, the Bulldogs responded by scoring at least one run in every inning to jump past the Railers.
Chase County tied the game at 1 when Brian Palermo scored on a Herington error in the bottom of the first, then took the lead in the second on another Herington error that allowed John Lang to score to make it 2-1.
The Bulldogs scored single runs in every inning until the sixth, when they scored five runs to put the game out of reach. The inning was highlighted by a two-RBI single from Palermo, who finished 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored, a home run and three RBI.
Palermo also got the victory on the mound, as he went five innings, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out nine and walking two. Cole Starkey earned the save in two innings of relief.
In Game Two, the Chase County offense played hide-and-seek until late, as the Bulldogs did not score until plating five runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.
“We did not hit the ball consistently all day,” CCHS coach Jay Talkington said. “We had some really poor at-bats, hit too many lazy fly balls and did not execute in bunting.”
While waiting on the offense to come around, the Bulldogs got a gem of an outing from pitcher Shawn Talkington, who went all six innings, striking out 15 batters while walking just one and scattering four hits.
Coby Onek broke the scoreless tie in the fourth when he singled home Chayne Onek from second to make it 1-0.
That opened the floodgates for Chase County.
Palermo and Greg Davis each tripled in the five-run fourth, while later, in the fifth, Starkey singled with the bases loaded to drive in two runs that made it 9-0.
After Palermo walked and Nate Phipps reached on a bunt single to again load the bases, Hannigan was hit by a pitch to plate Starkey, who represented the game-ending run.
Davis went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and three RBI.
Chase County is now 17-1 and will be the No. 1 seed in next week’s Regional tournament to be held in Cottonwood Falls. The Bulldogs will play the winner of Marmaton Valley-Altoona Midway at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
Chase County softball splits against Herington
The Chase County softball team split a doubleheader against Herington on Thursday night, winning Game One, 1-0, before falling in the nightcap, 4-1.
In the opener, Taylor Rains picked up her seventh victory of the season in the circle with a three-hit shutout, striking out six while allowing just one walk.
Chase County managed to plate the only run of the game in the fifth inning, but it would be all the Lady Bulldogs would need.
Rains led off the frame with a double. Then, with one out, Robin Grokett singled to right to drive home Rains from second.
Rains and Grokett’s hits were the only two hits for Chase County.
In Game Two, Chase County starter Briana Talkington suffered her first loss of the season to fall to 3-1.
Chase County scored its only run in the second inning when Ashley Cahoone singled with one out and then scored on a Kelly Hannigan double to center.
Hannigan went 2-for-3 in Game Two, while Aubry Watts went 1-for-3 with a double. Chase County next plays in the Class 2A Regional on Tuesday against Valley Falls in Alma. Chase County is the No. 2-seeded team in the Regional with a 13-5 record.
