Fourth-seeded Nebraska-Omaha made its one hit count, as Lindsey Slocum’s RBI double was the difference in UNO’s 1-0 victory over No. 5 seed Minnesota State-Mankato.
MSU’s Megan Teal struck out 12 of the 22 batters she faced and allowed just a single hit, but it ended up coming at the wrong time.
In the fifth, after a walk to Treightin Yates and a sacrifice bunt from Chelsea Koch, Slocum’s double broke the no-hitter and the scoreless tie.
Beth Haley, the North Central Conference’s freshman of the year, kept UNO’s lead from there.
The left-hander allowed no runs and four hits in her seven innings, striking out three and walking none.
UNO will face Emporia State in the winner’s bracket at 4:30 this afternoon.
Southwest Minn. St. 3, NW Missouri 2
Amber Burkhart contributed the game-winning single as No. 2-seeded Southwest Minnesota State pulled out a 3-2 victory in eight innings over No. 7-seeded Northwest Missouri State.
Amanda Johnson improved her record to 28-4, as she allowed six hits and struck out seven in her complete-game performance.
SMSU’s Kiley Petersen had the game’s only home run, hitting a two-out blast to center in the sixth to tie the contest at 2.
Kristin Braden also added two hits and a run scored for the Mustangs.
SMSU will face Winona State today at 2:15 this afternoon.
Winona State 2, Central Missouri 1
Mollie Bjelland’s fourth inning triple produced two runs, and it would be all the offense the sixth-seeded Warriors would need in a 2-1 victory over third-seeded Central Missouri in the first game of the North Central Regional on Thursday.
Bjelland’s three-base hit first scored Amanda Wilhelm, then Bjelland scored on the same play as an error advanced her home and made the lead 2-0.
Central’s Kherri-Dean Hummer closed the gap with a solo home run to left-center in the sixth, but the Jennies failed to get a baserunner the rest of the way.
Winona’s Kristen Fossell picked up the complete-game win, allowing four hits and one run while striking out four.
UCM’s Megan Leonard allowed just two runs — one earned — in her seven innings of work. She also added 10 strikeouts.
Winona plays Southwest Minnesota State at 2:15 p.m today.
Northwest Missouri 1, Central Missouri 0
Seventh-seeded Northwest Missouri State survived the tournament’s first elimination game, as the Bearcats took a 1-0 victory in 11 innings against Central Missouri.
Northwest’s Kelly Morris and Central’s Megan Leonard staged a classic pitchers duel, as both kept the game scoreless through nine innings.
In the tenth, UCM made the switch to Kristal Holland in the circle, and Northwest finally scratched an unearned run off her an inning later.
With a runner on second and two out, Cortney Channell reached on an error by shortstop Tracey Anderson.
On the same play, Leslie Erin came around to score the game’s only run.
Morris struck out 10 in her 11 innings of work, walking none while giving up 10 hits.
Leonard added six strikeouts in nine innings.
Northwest will face the loser of today’s Emporia State-Nebraska-Omaha contest at 9 tonight.
