Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. Give these folks a pat on the back ...

HAOMIAO YU and Xiang Liu, who will open a new restaurant at 728 E. 12th Ave. The Peking Express will serve Chinese food.

- Michelle Sheldon, who was selected as the runner-up for Educator of the Year by the Rotary Club District 5710.

- Organizers and participants who helped build the new playground at Peter Pan Park.

- ESU track athlete Jonel Rossbach, who won four titles at the MIAA championship. She won the 800-, 1,500-, 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs.

- The Hopkins Foundation, which gave awards and cash prizes to the following employees of the Emporia school district for doing outstanding work: Robbie Hill, Joni Black, Jan Spade, Stefanie Baker, Janine Dorr, Laura Schwinn, Michelle Sheldon, Jill Fornelli, Ginger Robert, Susan Livingston, Kelli Woodworth, Alice Aman, Linda Dieker, Anita O’Dell and Nelda Swan.

- Organizers and participants of the Clint Bowyer Charity Golf Tournament. The event raised $160,000.

- Amy Hayden, who held a “Zumbathon” to raise $8,000 for Keri Wilkie, who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

- Emporia State University English professor Gary Holcomb, who received the 2008 President’s award for Research and Creativity.
