April Huddleston calls it a blessing in disguise.
In 2006, Huddleston had to sit out her entire first season at Emporia State because of a knee injury.
Her time wasn’t wasted, though. It was then she began to learn what Emporia State softball was all about, as the team went 62-7 and advanced all the way to the national championship game.
“I got to watch Bree (Beattie) and Mo (Melissa Stevens) and Doc (Megan Davison) and Courtney (Reed) and all them and kind of define what the tradition was,” Huddleston said.
Three years later, Huddleston and the rest of the ESU upperclassmen have been able to keep that tradition strong.
It hasn’t been easy, either.
The Hornets lost six starters off their 50-12 squad a year ago.
The word, at least quietly, was that perhaps this was the year that ESU would fall back into the pack with the rest of the MIAA.
