Guild members create Bowyer quilt to raise funds

Wednesday, May 7, 2008

If you’ve ever dreamed of owning a quilt commemorating Clint Bowyer, this fall you’ll have your chance.

The Emporia Regional Quilters’ Guild has made a quilt commemorating native Emporian and NASCAR driver Bowyer. The quilt is autographed by Bowyer and includes pictures. It also has several teammates autographs as well as Richard Childress.

Sandy Humphreys of the Emporia Regional Quilters’ Guild said the quilt will be raffled off, likely in the fall. The group has been working on the quilt for a while now, Humphreys said. She said it took a while to get the signatures.

The original plan was to auction the quilt off on eBay, but they decided to raffle it off locally instead.

“I would like to see it stay in the community than to see it go to a random person,” Humphreys said.

Proceeds from the raffle will go for educational programs for the quilt guild or community projects. The guild participates in a lot of community projects including making and donating quilts for Shiloh House.

“We made three quilts for the twin-sized beds there,” she said. “And each child will be able to take a quilt home.”

Raffle tickets are available now at Prairie Pieces Quilt Shop, 911 Commercial St. Tickets are $1 or six for $5. Raffle tickets will be available at other locations at a later date. The quilt also will be displayed at the Flinthills Mall. No date has been set for that display yet.
