It took a while to complete Friday night’s doubleheader against Topeka High, but the end result was well worth it for the Emporia High softball team.
Despite taking nearly 5 hours to compete two seven-inning games, the Lady Spartans came away with their first victories of the season, as EHS swept Topeka High, 5-2 and 9-8.
“It was just tremendous,” EHS coach Ray Owens said. “The girls were so excited; they got pretty fired up. It meant a lot. It was so great to see the smiles on their faces.”
Emporia High did it on the arm of pitcher Cassandra Huth, who pitched 12 2/3 of a possible 14 innings in the twinbill, picking up two wins in the process while Hannah Lynch got the save in Game Two. Lynch, who typically starts the second game of Emporia High’s doubleheaders, had soreness in her arm and did not start the second game.
