Bowyer’s Charity Golf

One of the top drivers on the NASCAR circuit will be in Emporia on Tuesday racing around the Emporia Municipal Golf Course for a good cause.

Clint Bowyer will be host of the first annual Clint Bowyer Charity Golf Event to raise money to benefit Emporia. Friday, he talked with The Gazette about the event.

Q How did you come up with idea for a charity event to benefit Emporia?

A Every driver has a charity and with everything that has happened in the community, I just wanted to help make Emporia a better place. I grew up there and it is home to all of us. I want to make sure I can do what I can to make it the same great town that I grew up in. We are setting up a trust fund at the Emporia Community Foundation to support whatever is needed in the community.

Q Have you identified any projects that you want to do yet?

A It’s too early to say. We need really need to look around and see what needs to be done.

Q Will this be a one-time event and is the event sold out this year?

A This is something I want to make an annual thing and just keep building on it. This year, we are gong to have the golf outing and then dinner and an auction. The event is sold out this year. All the teams have filled up and all the plates for dinner have been filled up. This is really a learning year for us so I hope people understand.

Q How are your golfing skills?

A Terrible. I am just glad I don’t have to win this golf tournament to do good. I am really excited about all the people that have jumped on board to help us out throughout the community. I think we have a good group of people participating and I think we can raise a bunch of money and put it to a good cause.

Q Will any other NASCAR drivers be attending?

A I had Carl Edwards coming with me, but they have car testing at Charlotte.

Q If people are not participating can they still make a donation?

A Absolutely. Any donations can be sent to the Emporia Community Foundation, or they can call Ken Calhoun at the foundation (342-9304) for more information.

Q Who are some the big sponsors that have stepped up?

A Coca-Cola of Emporia, Jack Daniels, Martin Tractor, Murphy Agra — Bruffs will cater the dinner just to name a few. There are also many people who have helped from day one, like Ray and Bev Toso, Susan Huthcinson, all the Tidwells, Rich Jaggard at the golf course and Ken Calhoun at the Emporia Community Foundation.

Other sponsors for the tournament include SR Coffman Constriction, Walburn Athletic Club, Longbine Auto Plaza, Auto Glass Center, John North Ford, Modern Air Conditioning, Mussatto Bros. Distributing, Craig and Georgia Abbott and GK Building Partners.
