Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. Give these folks a pat on the back ...

VILLAGE SCHOOL students Jose Rodriguez and Keenan Pierce, who received Master Recycler Awards from the Natural Resources Advisory Board. They received the awards because of their efforts to collect paper and aluminum cans at the school.

- The Emporia State University baseball team, which won 35 straight games to set the MIAA record. Central Missouri ended ESU’s winning streak.

- Jacquelyne Leffler, who threw the discus 162 feet and 4 inches to claim the third farthest discus throw in Kansas high school history.

- ESB Financial, which received a “Blue Ribbon Bank” award from Veribanc. The award is based on Federal Reserve Board data that demonstrates financial strength of a bank.

- Organizers of a Zumba-thon, which will raise money for the Keri Wilkie Breast Cancer Fund. The fundraiser will take place Saturday at the Emporia Fitness Center.

- The ESU Hornets softball team, which won the regular season MIAA title. This was fourth straight year the team has won the division title.

- Anne Kretsinger, who will receive the University of Kansas Chancellor’s Student Award. The honor is given to 10 of the more than 3,500 undergraduate seniors at KU.

- The Chicken House in Olpe, which this week celebrated 50 years of service to the community and the area.
